Alex Redington is an internationally acclaimed violinist and teacher. He was the first violinist and a founder member of the celebrated Doric String Quartet for 27 years, having formed the group at the age of 15. His last recording of Beethoven String Quartets reviewed by Gramophone Magazine paid tribute to the ‘mesmerising playing of first violinist Alex Redington.’ Dedicated to teaching Alex is a professor of violin and chamber music at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Yehudi Menuhin School, as well as Cambridge University.
His passion for chamber music has led to collaborations with Benjamin Grosvenor, Jonathan Biss, Peter Wispelwey, Alexander Melnikov, Marc-André Hamelin, Mark Padmore, Ian Bostridge, and Elisabeth Leonskaja amongst others. He has performed at many of the world’s leading venues including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, and Wigmore Hall, as well as touring extensively throughout Europe, South East Asia, Australia and the USA. Alex performs regularly at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, USA.
Alex’s solo roles include performances with the Vienna Symphony, Netherlands Radio Orchestra, BBC Scottish and BBC Symphony Orchestras with conducters Markus Stenz, John Adams, Peter Oundjian and Edward Gardner. Since 2010 Alex recorded exclusively for Chandos as a member of the Doric Quartet. Their recordings have frequently been selected as Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and Chamber Choice in the BBC Music Magazine.
